Decoupling of gypsum board in stud wall systems to improve Sound Transmission Class (STC) can be done several ways.  One way is to construct staggered stud walls on 2" x 6" soleplates.  A second method is to build independently supported double walls with an air space in between.  A third design utilizes resilient channesl for attachment of gypsum board panels to the supporting structure without directly contacting the framing.  Although the original 1/2" thick 25 gauge resilient channel developed by USG in the 1960's went through rigorous testing, untested modified channel designs have pervaded the market.  Performance of resilient channels is also dependent on the alignment of the centerline of the slotted attachment holes.  Another common installation error is to screw completely through the resilient channel into the framing.   The latest and most efficient rated low profile wall and ceiling designs utilize the HUSH MOUNT™ type RDIC Resilient Drywall Isolation clips.  Used in conjunction with standard drywall furring channels (hat track), RDIC clips increase the air cavity between the mass of the wall/ceiling (drywall) and the non-isolated structure (framing studs or joists).  Resilient decoupling of the drywall and framing results in a compact, low profile discontinuous construction which boots the Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Impact Isolation Class (IIC) ratings.  Standard 7/8' or 1 1/2" hat track channels snap into the RDIC clips on 24" centers horizontally.  The gypsum board/drywall attachment to the hat track can be with conventional fasteners, and practices without concern for short circuiting the system.  Tested single wall 2 x 4 designs yield STC ratings of 56 to 64 well exceeding similar designs with resilient channel decoupling.

 Installation/Application Recommendations

The diagram at left shows HUSH MOUNT™ model RDIC isolation clip grid layout locations.  For single 5/8" gypsum board layer, vertical (V) and horizontal (H) spacing are 24" and 48" respectively.  For double layer 5/8" gypsum board systems, the spacing is 16" and 48" respectively.
The diagram at right shows direct attachment of HUSH MOUNT™ model RDIC-100 isolation clips in a ceiling/floor system.  Deeper floor joist cavities typically result in higher STC ratings compared to 2 x 4 stud wall systems.  System ratings as high as STC-66 and IIC-82 have been attained.
General Information  
  • RDIC Isolation Clips are to be installed on one side of the partition only.
  • Positioning of clips shall be no greater than 2" at the bottom of the wall and the top row shall be within 6" of the ceiling.
  • For ceiling applications, the first row of RDIC clips shall be within 8" of the wall at each end of a run.
  • For RDIC-100 clips, ensure the internal metal Ferrell is tight to the framing
  • Hat track is to be spliced with 6" overlap in mid span and secured with screws and wire ties.
  • Framing and clip location details for intersecting wall and other junctures are furnished for each project.
  • New type RDIC-200 Isolation Clips can be used 24" o.c. vertically even with double layer drywall.
  • Do not use nails for fastening clips to framing.  Fastener recommendations will be made for each project.
  • Maximum dead load per RDIC-100 is 36 lbs.; do not hang cabinets, bookshelves or other heavy items.
  • Fire rated walls receive special detailing.  Consult BRD when adding clips to existing fire rated assemblies.
